BW Edelweiss joins VLCC fleet
Okpo, South Korea - 2 January 2008
BW Shipping's newest VLCC, the double-hull, 301,000 dwt BW Edelweiss, was delivered on 3 January in South Korea.
The BW Edelweiss will be remembered as the ship that took the Hong Kong shipping registry above 36 million gt to a record 36.07 million gt. She is the 1,230th ship to be registered in Hong Kong and the 26th large tanker Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has built for companies in the BW Group.
The ship is named after the Edelweiss flower and was christened by Barbara Prammer, president of the Austrian parliament and godmother to the ship, on 20 December 2007 at a ceremony in South Korea.
Captain William Lambden, who took the ship on its maiden voyage from South Korea to Singapore, said: “I’ve been on many VLCCs and without a word of a lie this is the best quality and best looking one I’ve been on in my time at sea. I’m proud to be the master on it but it’s the whole team working together on the ship which produced the end results.”
